How to Transfer Rediffmail to Gmail – A Technical Viewpoint

    • Rediff Mail

Rediffmail is an email provider in India which enables its clients to create free email accounts. It provides 10MB on mail attachment. The email service supports POP3 and SMTP servers to access Rediff mailbox.
Rediff email Incoming Mail Server (POP3) – pop.rediffmail.com (port 110)
Rediff email Outgoing Mail Server (SMTP) – smtp.rediffmail.com (port 25)

    • Google Mail

Google service offers email client access for receiving and sending emails through Gmail account. It supports 20MB on file attachment and for security reasons, Gmail uses POP3 over an SSL connection, to make sure that email client supports encrypted SSL connections.
Google Incoming Mail Server (POP3) – pop.gmail.com (SSL enabled, port 995)
Outgoing Mail Server – The SMTP mail server address provided by local ISP or smtp.gmail.com (SSL enabled, port 465 or 587)

The main feature of Gmail is it supports IMAP configuration and the benefit is user can easily save the data on server basis of each folder i.e., inbox, sent items, drafts etc. Therefore, many users start switching from Rediffmail.

Transfer Rediffmail to Gmail & Take Rediffmail Mail Backup

There is no direct solution to take backup of Rediffmail. To Migrate from Rediffmail to Gmail follow the below-mentioned step:

Step1: To Switch from Rediff to Gmail

      1. Login to Google mail with the correct credential
      2. Click on Gear icon and go to Settings
      3. Now, click on Accounts and Import option and Import mail and contacts
      4. A new window will appear with the message “What account do you want to import from?”
      5. Provide the email id of Rediffmail in the text bar i.e., name@rediffmail.com and click on Continue
      6. Enter the password of your Rediffmail account and click on Continue then, Start import
      7. Now, click on OK and check the list of labels in left side
      8. After the completion of migration process, you will see a new folder by the name of your Rediffmail id
      9. Click on that folder you will get emails of Rediffmail

Note: As discussed above Rediffmail does not configure with IMAP therefore, it only imports the emails of inbox. One can transfer emails from sent items, drafts, and other folder also by following these steps:

  1. Sign into Rediffmail and go to Sent
  2. Select the emails which need to be migrated
  3. Click on Move mail and Inbox
  4. Assign your inbox name as a sent item
  5. Now, follow the above-mentioned steps again to transfer sent items of Rediff account to Google account.

Step2: Take Rediffmail Mail Backup

A question may be hit on your head that after transferring the data Rediff to Gmail, why to take a backup? A user may get all Rediff data on Gmail but this service is available only for 30days. After 30days a user needs to import the data again. Google mail also a cloud-based email server and to save data on cloud-based is quite risky.
